Thelda Ann Harris

Hampton- Thelda Ann Harris, 73, died Monday, July 23, 2012, in Hampton, Virginia.

Thelda was born on August 16, 1938 to John and Rosa Simmons Lamb in Norfolk. She grew up with three siblings, Melvine Lamb Williams, John Henry Lamb, Jr. and Raymond Eugene Lamb. All have predeceased her as well as her daughter, Lynne Powell Cameron. Thelda, or Peggy as she was called, was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk. She sang in Booker T’s choir and played tennis.

Mrs. Harris retired from federal service as a shipping clerk at the Norfolk Naval Base and Langley Air Force Base. She was a longtime member of Messiah Presbyterian Church in Norfolk where she sang in the choir.

Survivors include her husband, David D. Harris, her children, Joset A. Powell, Danette A. Powell, Lisa D. Powell and Herman Powell, Jr. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Pamela Harris, Deborah Harris, Anita Harris, David Harris, Jr. and Pastor Leander Harris, her grandchildren and great grandchild; Laurie Powell-Patterson, Jeffrey G. Young, Powell Ryan Cameron and Myles David Patterson, and numerous other grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Messiah Presbyterian Church, Norfolk. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.pretlowandsons.com .
