Norfolk - Al Morton Cherry Sr. of Piping Rock Road, quietly slipped away to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 17, 2007.
Al Morton Cherry Sr. was born on August 1, 1924 to the late Cassie and Linear Clyde Cherry Sr. in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the husband of the late Mary Murell Cherry.
He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1941.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a mine-man third class. He held several jobs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard including: sheet metal worker, wood ship corker, fireman, and police officer. He formerly lived in the South Norfolk Community.
Al Morton Cherry is survived by daughter Gloria Ann Dillard (Pete) of Alexandria, VA., sons Al Morton Cherry Jr. (Sheryl) of Springfield, Mass., Lamon Linear Cherry Sr. (Gilda) of Norfolk, VA., brother Linear Clyde Cherry Jr. (Olivia) of Chesapeake, VA, five grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A funeral service will be held Friday at noon in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Viewing will be held Thursday from 2pm - 7pm at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6pm - 7pm.
