Anderson Lee "Benny" Benson Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 6, 2018, at the Hampton VA Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. Benny was born in Princess Anne County, Virginia to Corine Alberta Benson and Claude Cooper.
Benny, affectionately called "Cootie" by his family, grew up in Queen City and attended Crestwood High School. After graduating, he attended Norfolk State University, then enlisted and served in the United States Army. Along with being a proud veteran, he was a salesman. He sold insurance and was the past owner of Haskell's Furniture store in Norfolk, Virginia. He retired from Waterworks in 2008.
Benny loved the Lord and was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church from childhood until joining Enoch Baptist Church in 2006. Having a love for his community, Benny served 50 years as a member of the Rising Sun Lodge #2, Norfolk, Virginia. He was a 32 Degree Mason, and a past member of the Arabia Temple No. 12, Portsmouth, Virginia. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 5 in Norfolk, Virginia, and the President of the Norfolk Players Guild. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and card player.
Anderson L. Benson Sr., is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Jane E. Benson and pet, BJ Benson. He is also survived by two sons, Darryl Davis of Virginia, and Anderson Lee Benson Jr. (Linda) of Little Rock, Arkansas; two step-children Reuben Perkins Jr., and Regina Perkins; one sister, Priscilla Tennyson; two brothers, Lawrence Cuffee (Andrea), and Danny Pringle Sr.(Nell); a loving aunt, Necie Hicks and a beloved niece, Melanie Littlejohn-Lee and her sons. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, many loving friends, and family.
A celebration of Anderson's life will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Enoch Baptist Church, 5641 Herbert Moore Rd., Virginia Beach, 23462, with Dr. Michael G. Daniels, Pastor officiating. Interment will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2018 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Virginia. Viewing will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 from 5pm until 7pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, Virginia.
