Bernice Mae Beason was born on May 8, 1927 in New Zion, South Carolina to the late Clarence McFadden Sr., and Janie Witherspoon as the only girl amongst three brothers (Pat, Sidney Sr., and Clarence Jr.,) who have since preceded her in passing.
As a young adult, Bernice moved to Norfolk, Virginia with her mother and traveled between there and Connecticut. During that period, she attended cosmetology school in New York and served as a cosmetologist in New York. She then married her husband William Beason in Connecticut in 1959. When he passed away in June 1969, she served as a rock for her two children (Patricia and Cheryl) with the help of the Lord and began to work at Norden Technologies in Norwalk, CT. She also was a faithful member of Messiah Baptist Church in Bridgeport, CT.
Bernice was a lover of life and family, making connections and striking up conversation with anyone who would listen. Bernice had a memorable dancing shimmy that she would bring out whenever the right song was played, often praising the Lord at church. She also loved to host barbecues at her home in Monroe, CT. Bernice was also an explorer and traveled across the US and Caribbean spreading her love of life. In her later years, she enjoyed watching the news and doing word search puzzles.
Bernicreciatee moved to Virginia Beach, VA in April 2003 to be closer to her youngest daughter Cheryl Jackson and she became a devoted member of First United Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, VA.
On Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 11:25am at the age of 96, Bernice went to be with the Lord in the care of her youngest daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Kelvin Jackson who cared for Bernice in her last moments.
Bernice leaves to cherish the memories, Frances McFadden (Stratford, CT) who served as a sister to her throughout her lifetime, two daughters, Patricia Bula (Naugatuck, CT) and Cheryl (Kelvin) Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA); two grandchildren Kelita (Chauncey) Williams (New Kent, VA) and William Jackson (San Antonio, TX); four great grandchildren Aireaus, Atlanta, Akaysha of CT and Londyn of VA. She also leaves a host of family, friends, and church family. In addition, Bernice had a granddaughter (Gloria) and great-grandson (Anthony Jr.), who preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at First United Presbyterian Chuch, 745 E. 29th Street, Norfolk. Viewing will be from 5pm until 7pm Tuesday, September 12, 20023 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeke.
