Obituary

Carla Thomasine Hillman Yarborough, was born on May 11, 1965, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of Frank and Ida Cade. She transitioned to her heavenly home on Monday, March 25, 2019, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Carla was raised in Chesapeake, Virginia. She attended Norfolk and Chesapeake Public Schools. She graduated from Deep Creek High School as an honor graduate, where she was a tri-athlete; playing volleyball, basketball and softball. Carla was MVP in all sports. She enjoyed the game of basketball and was a very talented Guard. As a member of the Girls Varsity Basketball team, Carla played alongside her sister, Sheila, and cousin, Trena, where they lead the team to win two Virginia State Girls Championship Games.

Upon graduation from high school, Carla attended North Carolina State University on a 4 year basketball scholarship, where she played for the legendary Coach Kay Yow. Carla was a successful basketball player with impressive stats. She was 3rd in program history in most assists in NCAA tournament, 7th in program history in most NCAA Tournament games played and 2nd best in total program history with 12 assists in a single game vs. Clemson on January 3, 1987. As a member of the Wolfpack Women's Basketball Team, Carla won two ACC Championships in 1985 & 1987 respectively. Carla graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a minor in Criminology.

After graduating from NC State, Carla remained in North Carolina and began working for the North Carolina Department of Corrections at Central Prison as a Correctional Officer for 5 years. Carla left the prison and began working for the NC Department of Corrections as a Surveillance Officer. Carla was one of the first female Surveillance Officers within the department. Carla continued to work for the department serving in various roles advancing to her final position as a Chief Probation and Parole Officer. After 30 years of dedicated service, Carla retired. Upon retirement she was awarded the highest award for the State of North Carolina service, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by NC Governor Roy Cooper

June 01, 1991, Carla married Michael Leroy Yarborough. From this union, two sons, Xavier Michael and Gabriel Alexander, were born.
At an early age, Carla joined New Hope United Church of Christ in Norfolk, Virginia. During college, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a result of the influence of a fellow teammate, Claudia Kreicker. Carla later joined Wake Chapel Baptist Church. Carla loved her church and was an active disciple. She served on the Security Ministry, Heritage Ministry, Cub Master and Leader for Pack 366 and a Tenor in the Voices of WCC choir.
Carla was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Virginia Cade and her brother, Robin Francis Hillman. Carla's life and positive, loving spirit will be remembered by her sons, Xavier Michael and Gabriel Alexander, Raleigh, NC, Michael Yarborough, Jr of Knightdale, NC; three daughters, Tina Yarborough of Raleigh, NC, Lakesha Richardson (Rufus) of Louisburg, NC, and Michele Yarborough of Durham, NC; her father, Frank Cade of Shaw, Mississippi; six sisters, Shirlene Smith, Tonia Hillman of Norfolk, VA, Valarie Herron, Lynnette Hall (Edward) of Chesapeake, VA, Rhonda Horton (Jeffrey) of Northern, VA, and Sheila Manderville of Portsmouth, VA; two brothers, Zachary Hillman (Belinda) of Chesapeake, VA and Dana Hillman (Lynette) of Norfolk, VA; two special sisters, Sharon F. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at New Hope Congregational Christian Church, 145 E Liberty Street, Norfolk.  Viewing will be held on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake is in charge of arrangements.
