PORTSMOUTH - On Nov. 13, 2009, Reverend Johnson, husband, father, pastor and faithful servant to God, joined his Lord after a full life of 80 years. Reverend Johnson was born June 24, 1929 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Cary Johnson, Sr., Pasquotank Country, North Carolina. There he received his early education in the public school system and graduated from the P.W. Moore High School. In 1950, Reverend Johnson enlisted in the United States Army and was a Korean War veteran. After leaving the military, he was married to the late Victoria Johnson. From that union, 10 children were born (14 Grand-Children). While diligently supporting his family, Reverend Johnson pursued the call of God and accepted the pastorate by faithfully serving 47 years as Senior Pastor to various A.M.E. Zion churches. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science in 1977 from Norfolk State College. In 1979, Reverend Johnson entered the school of Theology of Virginia Union College, later transferring to the school of United Christian Church of Christ to earn his Doctoral degree in May 2004. He retired from the Federal Government after dedicating 37 years of service to the Norfolk Naval Supply Center and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.Reverend Johnson actively served as the Associate minister of Providence A.M.E. Zion Church, Portsmouth, Virginia. He also served as a member and Vice President of the Interdenominational Ministers Forum in Portsmouth, Virginia, A.M.E. Zion Ministers Alliance, and the American Legion.Reverend Johnson was married to the Reverend Dr. India Johnson of Warrenton, North Carolina for 13 years. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Reverend India Johnson; ten children, Linda Wright (Henry), Cynthia Crawford, Kathy Wilson (Arthur), Wayne Johnson (Cheryl), Angela Arrington (Arch), Wendy Barnes (Rev. R. Barnes), Reverend Cary E. Johnson (Leslie), Vincent Johnson (Krystal), Victor Johnson (Nickia), Marcus Johnson, fourteen grandchildren, one stepdaughter Cheryl J. Knight, two stepsons Willis M. Kearney Jr.(Cheryl), Kelvin M. Kearney (Jean) and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.The funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, 11:00 a.m. at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 1710 Springfield Ave., Norfolk, Virginia. Viewing will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, 3 – 6p.m. at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, Virginia. Condolences will also be shared with the family on Wednesday at the funeral home from 6 -7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rev.
