White

Claud Norman White was born October 26, 1933, to the late Raleigh White and Meanda Holloman White in Ahoskie, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Emma L. White. He made his transition from labor to reward on February 16, 2026.
Claud was educated in Portsmouth Public Schools. He was an Honor Graduate and Class President of I.C. Norcom High School Class of 1954. He matriculated to Virginia State College now known as Virginia State University. He received a scholarship to major in Biology/Pre-Med and Art. He attended school an entire year before being drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for 5 years (1956-1961) with the rank of P4. Upon leaving the military he was employed as a lawn supervisor for Hanna Lawn Services for eight years until he and his wife, Emma L. White, decided to start their own business Greenwood Garden Service Inc on October 8, 1971. The business was successful for 39 years, never having a complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau and receiving a certificate stating this. The name was changed from Greenwood Garden Service to Greenwood Landscapes where he serviced residential and commercial properties in all of Hampton Roads and as far as the Eastern Shore. Claud had the opportunity to rescue two men from a burning home.
Claud White Sr. is survived by one daughter Gloria White Butler of Portsmouth, VA and one son Claud White Jr. (Dashea) of Concord, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren Larry A. Butler, Jr and Brandon G. Butler of Portsmouth, VA as well as Alyssia S. and Bria S. and Ellis J. White of Concord, NC. He also leaves to mourn two sisters Golena White of Hempstead, NY and Sarah Hunt of Portsmouth, VA. His siblings Joseph C. White, Marie W. Mitchell, and Fred C. White predeceased in death. He was also predeceased in death by his granddaughter Jasmine P. N. Butler. He leaves behind nieces, nephews and good friends Alfonzo Eure, Sinclair Bonaparte, and Tony Roscoe.
A Viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 5pm until 7pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty St, Chesapeake.
