Obituary

In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 21, 2023, the journey of a lifetime was completed and the glorious journey into eternal life began for Clifton Alexander Wood, Jr.  His lifetime journey began on January 19, 1958 in Norfolk VA as the only son of the late Mrs. Alma Ruffin Wood and Clifton A. Wood, Sr.

In his childhood years, he attended schools n Chesapeake, VA - Crestwood Elementary, Junior High, and High School (where his father was principal for 17 years), graduating in 1975 from Great Bridge High School.  His school affiliations included the Student Council Association, the National Honor Society, the Monogram Club, the Key Club, the Bible Club, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  He was voted the "friendliest" student among his graduating peers.  Clif's love for basketball began in high school; and he played tuba and trumpet in the high school marching band.  Clif attended Hampton University, and "Hollywood", as he was affectionately known, was a proud member of the Spartan Legion band of Norfolk State University.

During his education at NSU, Cliff met the love of his life in 1979, Rhonda Lavera Porter, whom he made his lifetime partner in December 2000.  He and Rhonda travelled life hand-in-hand, constantly supporting one another in all their endeavors.  A life-long Christian, he joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1974 and served his church with joy and diligence until his death.  Serving in many capacities, his leadership was best known as he chaired the Deacons' Ministry for many years in developing and growing the church that he loved.  Deacon Wood was well-loved and respected for his calm and peaceful nature in conducting the business of the church.

Cliff was the man-about-town.  He was a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, a community and city activist, loyal member of the Brothers & Sisters from the Yard (NSU), and a motorcycle enthusiast. He initially worked for the Boys & Girls Club of Norfolk, and later worked with the Norfolk Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, retiring in November 2013.

Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda; one nephew and four nieces; numerous cousins; his devoted godchildren, Nathaniel Harris, II, McKenzie Massey, and Mattie Madison; and lifelong friends, Nathaniel Harris and Adam Harrell, Jr.; and a host of friends.
