On Saturday, January 2, our dear and precious Aunt Cora Evelyn Wilson left this world behind and went home to her Heavenly Father. She now joins her loving husband, Robert L. Wilson and her beloved daughter, Mary Estelle Wilson in the land that is fairer than day. Aunt Cora was born to the Late Samuel and Mary Wilson on December 23, 1925. She is predeceased by her brother John Wilson, her sisters Mable Williams, and Rosa Turner.
Aunt Cora retired from the Chesapeake Public School System in 1989 where she was employed in the food services department.
She was converted at an early age and was a faithful and devoted life-time member of the Gordon Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she was honored to be the Mother of the Church. For many years she served as the church treasurer. But she considered it an honor and a privilege to serve as a doorkeeper in the House of the Lord.
Aunt Cora served her church well as an usher, and until her health failed she was always on her post. Even in sickness, she still remembered exactly when the usher anniversary would take place, and from her home sought the financial support of her family, in order that she might be a blessing to the house of God.
Aunt Cora was a kind and caring woman who never said a harsh word about anyone. She was well known for her gentle spirit and her calm and easy demeanor, often saying, "The Lord is going to work it out." Always the perfect hostess, Auntie loved to cook and never allowed her guests to leave her home without offering them something to eat.
Cora leaves to cherish her memory nephews who were more like her sons, Robert Wilson (Peaches), Augustus Williams (Mildred), Melvin Williams (Sarah); her niece who was more like her daughter, Mary Ann Wilson (John), her sister-in-law Emma Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Auntie's good-humor and loving personality will forever be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
The viewing will held Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The service of celebration will be held on Friday at Gordon Chapel AME Church with Reverend Kimberly Neal officiating. The family will receive visitors nightly at 3136 Aaron Drive (Camelot Section of Chesapeake) from 7-9p.m., and will procession to the church from Aaron Drive on Friday.
