Mrs. Dorothy Louise Hood of Chesapeake, VA passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She was born on November 8, 1937 in Cane Creek, SC, the daughter of the late Mr. Ivory Hyatte and Mrs. Edna Mae Cureton Hyatte.

She attended public schools in North Carolina and South Carolina, and graduated from Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, SC, where she was selected as "Miss Emmett Scott."

Dorothy was married to Joseph Hood, Jr., a former Navy sailor. When they were stationed in Pensacola, FL, she helped manage a daycare center and thoroughly loved taking care of the children. After transferring to Norfolk VA, she worked as a packer and neo-prene catcher of auto parts at Sheller-Globe Corporation. She developed many loving and lasting friendships with her co-workers.

After retiring, she enjoyed exercising with the Chesapeake Seniors-in-Motion, baking cakes for practically everyone, serving as an usher at her church, and doing whatever she could for anyone in need. She was an avid prayer-warrior and maintained many prayer journals. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music, especially songs by quartets.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Norfolk, and continued to worship with Rev. Dr. Joyner after The Philadelphia Fellowship was established.

Her greatest love, next to God, was her family. She truly loved them, especially her grandchildren.

Memories of her beautiful life will be cherished by her husband of 56 years, Joseph; son, Joseph Hood III (Wanda); daughter Joyce Hood; brother, ShayRon Hyatte of Columbia, SC; four grandsons: Breon Barnard, Jabari Hood, Tarikh Hood, and Maliki Hood; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held 12pm Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, where viewing will be held from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2021, at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Please join the service livestream at: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/3540750123
