Obituary

"Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of thy glory."

Dorothy Mae Wilson Morris was born on January 9, 1927. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and endeared friend to all who knew her. On January 25, 2024, she was called home to be with our Lord and Savior. Dorothy was the last surviving child of the late Josiah "Young" Wilson and Mary A. Overton Wilson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry J. Morris, Sr. her sons, James R. Bembry, Jr., Michael L. Morris and granddaughter, Brittany Stewart. Along with her husband, sons, granddaughter and parents, her siblings awaited her in heaven. They include, Vivian, Alonzo, John, George Everett, Josiah Benjamin, Mary Louise, Jessie Bernice, and her twin sister Doris Lee. We know their reunion was a glorious celebration.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her sons; Vern S. Morris (Jane), Reginald C. Morris (Karen), Joseph V. Morris (Brenda) and daughters; Michelle Morris-Walls (William), Sharon T. Harris, Wanda Y. Morris and daughter-in-law Toni Smaw-Bembry. She also leaves to celebrate her life, 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A life-long member of Saint Joseph's African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Dorothy served in many capacities over the years. More recently, she served as a member of the Senior Choir, on the churches kitchen/food service ministry team and as a Missionary and Deaconess. Worshiping the Lord was one of her greatest joys, as her faith was the foundation of her life.

Dorothy was educated in the Norfolk County school system, a graduate of Providence High School. She attended Tidewater Community College and was a certified dietitian. Mrs. Morris spent her professional career as a Food Service Supervisor for Norfolk Public Schools. She retired in 1989 after more than 20 years of service.

Her life's legacy is Love of God and Love of Family. Nothing was more important to Dorothy than her faith and her family. She took joy in having a house overflowing with family and friends. She beamed each time they gathered around the dining room table to share a meal that she had lovingly prepared. Dorothy was an excellent cook. She could open up her pantry to an assortment of ingredients and spices that the average person would not know what to do with and create something delicious. Her sweet potato pudding, holiday fruitcakes, pork chops smothered in onions and gravy, fried fish, were among the family's favorites, but everything she cooked was outstanding.

Dorothy was a warm, loving mother and grandmother. Every child's nutritional health, education and safety were important to her. This was especially true in regards to her own family members. She marveled at each new grandchild and later great grands. She was so proud of all of their accomplishments, their educations, the graduations, their careers. Most importantly, she was confident that they were raised and taught the right values and that the Wilson-Morris family legacy of faith and family would endure.

In her last years, her favorite much repeated phrase as she moved about the house was "Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might! Heaven and Earth are full of thy Glory." Heaven has received our angel. Dorothy Mae Wilson Morris will live on forever in our hearts.
