Virginia Beach - Dorothy Smith Holmes of the 1000 block of Dulcie Avenue was called home to rest September 7, 2006 at her home. Born in Norfolk, she was employed with the Virginia Department of Health in Norfolk for over 30 years until her retirement on July 1, 1976. She was a longtime member of St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a devoted member of the Trustee Board, and active in numerous other auxiliaries. Also, she held membership with Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., Nursing Sorority.



Mrs. Holmes is predeceased by her husband, Sidney L. Holmes, Sr. She is survived by her daughters, LaVerne Sweat (James E.) of Hampton, and Velma Rhone of Virginia Beach, a son, Sidney L. Holmes, Jr. (Helen) of Columbia, Maryland, a sister, Alma Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.



A funeral service will be held Tuesday at noon at St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be held Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
