Dorothy Scott Thompson was born on August 23, 1933 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Lula Tanner and Joseph C. Scott of Norfolk, VA. She was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools system, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1952. Her early Christian education took place at First Baptist Church Lambert's Point, and this is where she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She later united with New Bethel Baptist Church, where she remained until illness prevented her from attending.

Dorothy was always an extremely hard worker, having at least two jobs most of the time. She worked at Berson's Dress Shop, Hofheimer's shoe warehouse, and the Jewel Room in downtown Norfolk for over thirty years. Dorothy absolutely loved her nieces and nephews, and enjoyed spending time with them. Her hobbies included word find puzzles and listening to spiritual music. She was known as the greatest "yock" and steamed crab cook in Lambert's Point.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and nine siblings; Melvin Scott, Artelia Scott Walker, Raymond Scott, John Scott, Hazel Scott Holmes-Brown, Joseph Scott, Jr., Nellie Scott-Thomas, Henderson Scott, and Dennis Scott. Left to cherish her precious memories are her sister, Lula Scott Smith Lewis, her niece and caregiver of over 35 years - Beverly Grier-Smith, special nieces –Lola Swindell, Romaunda Mitnaul, and Constance Overton, special nephews – Dr. Ernest Holmes and Rodney Scott, special cousins –Brendafaye Mosby Jones and Gilda Chavis, and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 4212 Greenwood Drive, Portsmouth. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be 5 pm until 7 pm Tuesday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home Chesapeake.
