Obituary

Edith Mae Mackey, 73, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 7, 1949, to the late James O. Mackey Sr. and the late Katie Oliver Mackey. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Willie Mackey, Richard Mackey, and Eugene Mackey.

Edith was a 1967 graduate of Granby High School. She started her work career as a telephone operator with Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co, retiring over 30 years later from Verizon Telecommunications in 2002.

Edith was a faithful and dedicated member of New Central Baptist Church for 64 years. She served passionately on many boards and committees such as Superintendent of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Saturday Church School, Ruby Westbrook Missionary Ministry, Stewardship Committee, and the Hospitality Committee, where she helped prepare delicious meals. Edith used her business acumen as a member of the Trustee Board. Edith also served faithfully in the choir as her health permitted. Dear to her heart, Edith was especially dedicated to her work with the Annual Angel Tree Committee. She was proud to be known as a "Church Mother" to all the children of New Central and called them her "Church Babies."

Her legacy will live on in her faithful, loving, and devoted daughter, Jada Mackey-Wells; sisters, Betty Rainey (William), Joyce Moore, Hannah White, and Jacqueline Mackey; brothers James O. Mackey, Jr, and Quintin Mackey (Lorraine); grandchildren, Justin Mackey, Anthony Jayden Wells, and Alani Wells; niece Shannon Harrison and nephew Adam Harrison, who both considered her as a second mother, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, God children, and friends.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2023 at New Central Baptist Church, 700 Walker Ave, Norfolk, VA 23523. Viewing will be from 3pm until 5pm Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake VA 23324.
