CHESAPEAKE - Edwin C. Williams, 80, formerly of the 200 block of Shoreside Road, passed away peacefully at Chesapeake Health Care on May 21, 2008. A native of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, he was born July 13, 1927. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy C. Williams, and was the son of the late Blake and Irene Williams.
Edwin, a Korean War Veteran, received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1952. He attended Morgan State University and St. Paul's College, and was a retiree of Dominion Virginia Power. Edwin was a Past Master of the Progressive Lodge Number 80 Prince Hall Masons. He was also a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street.
Left to cherish his memory are his two devoted and loving daughters, Alveta Williams Ewell and Gretta Waugh (Jeff) of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Roi and Sydni Ewell of Portsmouth; an uncle and aunt, Ray and Lillian Austin, of Littleton, NC; a sister-in-law, Cecelia Williams, of Virginia Beach; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Vivian D. Williams and his brothers Rudolph, Floyd, and Armistead Williams.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, in Chesapeake, with Dr. Melvin O. Marriner officiating. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The viewing will be on Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. At other times, friends may share condolences at 3971 Longpoint Blvd in Portsmouth, where the Repass will be held following the Interment.
