Elsie H. Hewitt, 102, departed this life, September 15, 2016. Born in the Berkley section of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Sarah Rowe Hill, and granddaughter of the late Alexander Rowe. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and City University, where she earned a degree in business management and sociology. Sister Elsie was a social worker in New York City until her retirement, and a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Berkley.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Vann L. Hewitt, her sisters Colon Baker, Sarah Cooke Hill, and Marcella Hill, and her brothers, Dr. Carl M. Hill, Dr. Herman Hill, Lester Hill, and Ishmael Hill. Survivors include a loving great nephew, Lester K. McKay (Kiki); two great-great nephews, Dimitri Christopher McKay and Niko Deion McKay; several sisterly cousins and their children, Zetta Hubbard (Maryland), Barbara Brown (Edward), Dereke, Tinese, Bryan, Nicole and Isaiah, Safyia Jeffress (Holly and Drew), Nancy Hollins (Leah and Bethany)and a host of relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held 12 noon Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Berkley,706 Berkley Avenue Ext, Norfolk. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4-7pm Monday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
