On May 8th, 2023 Elvin William Johnson Sr. of Chesapeake, Virginia departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father. Elvin was born to the late Annie Elizabeth Johnson "Maggie" and William Elvin Doxey. Elvin was adopted at a young age and raised by his Step father Claude Johnson.As a young child Elvin attended Foreman Temple A.M.E. Zion Church with his Mother "Maggie" and his Dad Claude who also served as a superintendent there. Elvin accepted Christ at a young age and attended Norfolk County Public schools now known as Chesapeake public schools. He later entered the United States Army and the Army National Guard serving at different times as both an active duty soldier and as an active reserve duty soldier. Elvin and Shirley married in 1962. They had 5 beautiful children together, three sons and two daughters. Elvin was employed and retired as a highly decorated Civil Service Engineer with the United States Government at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.Elvin affectionately called "Bo-Bo" by his close friends had many talents and was blessed with creativity from birth. He opened his heart to his friends and family and enjoyed doing many things to include outdoor activities such as farming, fishing, hunting and riding his tractor and backhoe. He absolutely loved building things in and outside of his house and "barn". He was " a jack of all trades."Elvin (Daddy) never wanted anyone to know just how sick he was. We could always depend on him to provide. He kept a smile on his face during his illness. Never complaining, even in his last days. When doctors said one thing, God showed up and showed us another because "He has the last say."God is faithful. Through it all We thank God for his Grace and Mercy and Elvin's faithful and dedicated return as a member at New Foreman Temple A.M.E.Zion Church. God was directing his path and knew just how much he could bear. God is love. "We love you Mr. J. "See you tomorrow." We know He is in a better place with no more pain and resting with his Heavenly Father.Elvin leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of sixty years. Shirley May Johnson of Chesapeake Virginia. 3 sons: Steven Johnson (Atlanta, GA) Elvin Johnson Jr. (Atlanta, GA) Anthony Johnson (Teyah) (Portsmouth VA) and two daughters: Cheryl Johnson (Chesapeake, VA) and Theonita "Shaunta" Johnson (Chesapeake, VA) 17 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Ella Harper (George) Chesapeake Virginia and Barbara Wright (Oklahoma). A Special cousin Vincent Nixon and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his fathers William Elvin Doxey and Claude Johnson. His mother Annie Elizabeth Johnson and his brother Charles Doxey.A funeral service will be held 2pm Saturday at New Foreman AME Zion Chruch, 2313 Benefit Road, Chdesapeake, Virginia 23332. Viewing will be held 5-7pm Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Homr, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, Virginia,
