Obituary

Eugene Brower Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones on May 5 , 2026. He was born on October 21 , 1941, in Jackson Springs, NC, to Eugene and Jennie Lee Brower. A devoted husband, father of 5, brother of 11, grandfather of 12, great-grandfather of 21, and friend to many. He lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a deep love for his family. 

He shared 64 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara Elainor Brower. Together they built a life filled with love, faith, laughter, and lasting memories. Their marriage stood as an example of commitment and devotion to all who knew them.

For 49 years, Eugene worked as a heavy equipment operator for Southern Materials, Lone Star, Tarmac, and Vulcan Materials. Though the company’s name changed over the years, Eugene's dedication never did. A true professional in his craft, he took great pride in his work. Known for his strong work ethic, steady hands, and dependable nature, he earned the respect of co-workers and everyone who knew him. He believed in providing for his family and did so with quiet strength and humility.

He was the proud father to 4 daughters and 1 son – Valerie Brown (Lamont), Eugene Gregory Brower, Shelia Munden (Colbert), Crystal Brower Burke, and Nancy Ruffin (Ernest) – who were the center of his world. He cherished every moment spent with hisfamily and took great joy in watching it grow throughout multiple generations. His guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love will remain with them always.

Eugene was the oldest of 12 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Brower Sr. and Jennie Lee Brower, and by his brothers Hayward Brower, Willie Brower, and Carl Brower. He leaves to cherish his memory three sisters: Carolyn Jackson (William), Shirley LeGrande (Thomas), Pauline Richardson (Charles – deceased); and five brothers: Albert Brower (Beulah), John Brower (Theresa), Michael Brower (Beverly),Clifton Brower (Louvenia), Jerry Brower (Carrie).

He will be remembered for his kind heart, calm spirit, sense of humor, love of the Dallas Cowboys, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends.

Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11AM May 16th, 2026, at St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, 1700 Melon Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23523. The viewing will be Friday, May 15, 2026, from 5PM until 7PM at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake. The family appreciates the prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.
