Norfolk - Evelyn Olivia Skinner departed this life December 15, 2009. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late James and Queenie Skinner.

Evelyn was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1945. She earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Hampton Institute, and a Masters of Art Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.

She was a long time member of St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, where she enjoyed playing music for the Sunday school. She was a member of the children's usher board, and the youth choir. She was also a member of the Norfolk Teachers Association, The National Education Association, The Education Association of Norfolk, and the Tidewater Preschool Association. Evelyn taught school and retired after 45 ½ years.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include a nephew, Sidney J. Skinner; four nieces, Doris S. Williams, Alma S. Washington, Vanessa S. Jordan, and Darlene A. Skinner, a cousin, Sylvia Anderson and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at noon in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Entombment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be held Monday from 2pm – 7pm at the funeral home.
