- Evelyn Joyce Hall Smith peacefully slipped into eternal rest on January 17, 2009 surrounded by family.
Evelyn was born in Norfolk on August 7, 1928 to the late Sidney Hall and Mildred Perry. She was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and retired from the City School System in the mid-70s. She was a member of Wesley Union AME Zion Church where she sang in the choir and was active on the usher board until her health began to fail. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliary of ILA local 1248.
Evelyn was pre-deceased by her husband David "Cupcake" Smith and two sons David "GoGo" Smith and Lionel "Tab" Smith. Evelyn is survived by three daughters: Brenda Hall, Dale Diane Burke (James), Juanita Browne, one son Sidney Smith (Kathy) and Carl Lark who was like a son; nine grandchildren: Damon, Simbiat, Dominic, Lioniece, Phillip, Justin, Brittany, Cory, Arielle; four great-grandchildren: Paris, Titianna, Eljiah, Dymoni; daughter-in-laws Joanne Ricks Smith and Wanda Smith; brother-in-law Arlee Smith; two sisters-in-laws Emma Smith and Geraldine Burton; special friends Cleo & Joe Wright and Willie Mae Reid.
The homegoing celebration will be held at noon on Saturday, January 24, in Wesley Union AME Zion Church, 708 Johnson Avenue, Norfolk. Rev Willie Dixon will officiate. The viewing will be held 2pm – 7pm on Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, where the family will receive guest from 6pm – 7pm.
