Chesapeake - Fannie Ella Reid Threet (Nannie) went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the age of 98.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, she was the eighth born child of the late Rev. Amzie Reid (Gethseme Baptist Church) and Fannie Lowry Reid. Fannie is predeceased by her loving husband, Robert Threet of 51 years. Fannie graduated from high school in 1933 in Durham, North Carolina. She attended Shaw University in pursuit of a BS in Biology to become North Carolina's first woman doctor. As God plans would have it Fannie was redirected to Norfolk, Virginia where she earned a BS in Elementary Education from Little State University (Norfolk State University), Norfolk, Virginia.
Fannies love for children would lead her into a rewarding career with the Chesapeake School System. She taught at G.W. Carver Elementary (Chesapeake, Virginia) and was an avid leader in her community. Fannie was a Girl Scout Leader for Troop #176 and she established the Sheridan Heights Boys Scholarship Fund.
In 1979, Fannies' extraordinary love of children continued to shine as a beacon throughout her community, as she became a Foster Mother for the City of Chesapeake, VA, where she nurtured and loved over 100 children. Her accomplishments include: 1992 City of Chesapeake Mother of the Year award, 1994 Lifetime Service Award from Chesapeake Social Service and the 1993 Black Media Professional Award presented by Alvita Ewell. In honor of his Foster Mother, Fannie R. Threet, Alonzo Mourning established an annual scholarship award and the Fannie Threet Award in South Florida which recognizes outstanding adults in the community making a difference in the lives of children.
Fannie will always be remembered for her love of God, for whom was first in her Life.
Fannie is survived by her children, Robin L. Lott of Norfolk, Robert G. Threet (Carmann) of Chesapeake, Alonzo H. Mourning (Tracy) of Miami, FL, Princess Humphries of Norfolk, Earl Neighbors of Norfolk, and Antonio L. Threet of Norfolk; grandchildren, Genita Threet, Bradie Lott, Alonzo H. Mourning III, Robert M. Threet, Ryan M. Threet, Myka Mourning, and Alijah Mourning; great grandchild, Lynval K. Anderson, Jr. and a host of foster children, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday October 21, 12 noon at St. Johns AME Church, 545 East Bute St., Norfolk, Rev. John D. Burton, Pastor. Interment to follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, VA. Mrs. Threet's viewing will be held Sunday from 3 until 5 pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
