Obituary

Chesapeake - George Lee Higgins Sr. 86, went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2015. He was born in Cottage Grove, Alabama on March 27, 1929 to the late Roy G and Viola Higgins. George joined the U.S. Army in 1954 where served in Korea and Vietnam. He also traveled around the U.S. and the world during his time in the Army. He retired from the U. S. Army in 1978 as a Sergeant First Class after 23 years of service. Not content to rest, he began a 20 plus year career with the State of Virginia Department of Corrections. After he retired for the second time, he filled his leisure time traveling, spending time with friends and family, and partaking in such hobbies as fishing, hunting, and playing his favorite card game Pinochle.

At a young age, George accepted Jesus as his Savior and served with his whole heart until his death. George was a longtime member of Gabriel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served in various positions and on various boards. George was always willing to lend a helping hand in any project.

George was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Viola Higgins, his son George Higgins Jr., his brothers, Jesse and Jack Higgins, and sisters, Cora Higgins and Berthola Lauderdale. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Helen Lewis-Higgins, sons; Denise Higgins (Doretha) and Darryl Higgins (Maxine); daughters Gloria Hannon (Jimmy), Diann Lawrence (Ronald), Adriane Hudson, Mary Harper (Samuel), Monique Quesenberry (Michael), Patricia Phillips, and Tira Higgins. He also leaves to cherish his memory 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 5 great -great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of George's life will be held Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Twelve 12 p.m. at Gabriel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church 2216 Long Ridge Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322. Viewing will be held from 3 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, VA 23324.
