Obituary

Retired Sergeant First Class Glenn Preston Thomas entered into eternal peace on Monday, November 10, 2014. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on November 3, 1941 and was one of five children born the late William and Alice Thomas. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, he was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1960 and served for 27 years, 5 months and 15 days. (Everyone knows Glenn P. Thomas was VERY PARTICULAR) ? He retired with honorable service on August 31, 1987 with military decorations including the National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm.

Glenn P. was very passionate about the Army and after retiring from military service, he became a career counselor for disabled vets at the Virginia Employment Commission in Richmond, Virginia. He loved and served the Lord as a Deacon at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. Once he returned back to Norfolk, Virginia, he became an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served in numerous positions including Honorary Deacon. He taught for the adult education ministries; was a member of the senior gospel choir, and an active participant for the church's food bank. He generously volunteered his services whenever needed in the community by lending a helping hand through the community voting polls as well as being a member of his neighborhood watch.

During his free time, Glenn P. was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed a good book including mysteries, westerns, and biographies. He also loved listening to his gospel music at any given moment.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Alice Thomas; brothers, Aronious Quinn Thomas, William Eugene Thomas; and sister, Esther Mae Bruce.

Glenn P. Thomas will be remembered by his two sons Glenn P. Thomas II, Eugene A. Thomas, three granddaughters Maya M. Thomas, Cydni Williams, and Leah M. Thomas, sister Geneva C. Ortner along with a host of nieces, nephews and countless friends whom were blessed to know him.

A funeral service will be held noon Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be 3-7pm Thursday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Condolences can be offered to the family www.pretlowandsons.com.
