Booker
September 2, 1930 – January 25, 2023
Chesapeake - Harmor U. Booker, 92, formerly of the 600 block of Fernwood Farms Road, entered into eternal rest in Charlotte, NC on January 25, 2023 after a brief illness. Born in Amelia County, VA, Mr. Booker graduated from Virginia State University with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and Masters of Education degree. Mr. Booker was a long-time educator who helped usher Chesapeake Public Schools through the years of school integration with dignity and respect. During his 34 years as an educator, he touched the lives of many students, having worked as an Art teacher at Crestwood High School and then as principal at Southwestern Elementary, Edwards Wilson Elementary, and G.W. Carver High and Intermediate Schools. He retired from Chesapeake Public Schools as principal of Deep Creek Elementary in 1991. After his retirement, he continued to mentor student teachers from Norfolk State University and volunteer at schools for many years.
Mr. Booker was preceded in death by his wife Jyancy Sykes Booker, son Kevin Booker (Rita), and brother Robert Booker (Frances). He is survived by his sisters Pansy Gunter of Richmond, VA and Pearl Nicholls of Bladensburg, MD; two daughters, Karen Young (Geoffrey) and Karin Dancy (Joel); six grandchildren who he adored-Geoffrey, Lauren, Jonathan, Nia, Joshua, and Josiah; and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
A funeral will be conducted on Saturday, February 4 at noon at First Baptist Church Berkley, 706 E. Berkley Avenue, Norfolk by Rev. William D. Tyree III, pastor. The service will also be livestreamed at https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/2797855630 . Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, February 3 from 4 pm-6 pm at First Baptist Church Berkley. Face masks are required when indoors for both.
