Helen J. Smallwood, 96, of the 1200 block of Warfield Drive was called home to be with the Lord on September 10, 2011. Born in Norfolk, she was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street, where she served on the Deaconess Board. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the United Order of Tents.
She is predeceased by her husband, James Smallwood and her daughter Eunice Stinson. Survivors include her daughter, Helen Carrington (Leon) of Virginia Beach; a son-in-law, George Stinson of Norfolk; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Scott of Chesapeake and Helen Scott of Lumber Bridge, NC, ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, seventeen great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held noon Friday at First Baptist Church Bute Street. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6pm – 8pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to Ready Academy Christian School.
