Herbert Mitchell Sr. was born September 8, 1933; he received his heavenly reward on August 9, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Ahoskie, North Carolina to Willis and Helena Mitchell who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Geneva Johnson and Susie Mae White, and daughter-in-law, the Honorable Faye Watford Mitchell. He was a lifelong member of New Willow Grove Baptist Church. Herbert was the founder and owner of Oak Grove Service Center which later became Mitchell's Complete Upholstery.

Herbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Mitchell; his children, Sandra Etheridge (Elwood), Herbert Mitchell, Frances Griffin (Herbert), Karen Cuffee (Jay), and Katrenia Washington; a special nephew, William Snead (Gail); one brother, Willis Mitchell Jr. (Ruby), one sister, Cathaleen Mitchell; fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at New Willow Grove Baptist Church, 841 W. St. Brides Road, Chesapeake, where viewing will begin at 9am the day of the service. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
