Chesapeake - Herman Lee Hawkins, Sr., 79, of the 600 block of Partridge Ave, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital, Hampton, VA. Herman was born in Norfolk, VA on April 27, 1930 to the late Elder Solomon and Lillie Mae (Austin) Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bernice Whitaker.
He served a tour in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Later he went on to work at and retire from Norfolk Naval Shipyard; and Pinkerton and Securitas Security. He was member of First Trinity A.M.E. Church, where he served on the Steward Board, Lay Organization and Church Choir.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joyce Mamie Wilson Hawkins; three sons, Herman Lee Hawkins, Jr. (Joyce B.), Micheal Dean Hawkins (Bernice), and Victor Boyd Hawkins; two daughters, Vicki Jo Hawkins, and Joyce Ann Hawkins; six grandchildren, Herman L. Hawkins III, Sheena Jefferson, Derek Hawkins, Terrance J. Hawkins, Christina A. Hawkins, and Ignascius Nova; one great granddaughter, London Jefferson; two brothers, Eugene Hawkins (Trudy), and Wilbert Hawkins (Shirley); one sister, Shirley Robinson (Walter); two nieces, Vivian McInnis, Christine Fauntleroy; a special niece, Barbara Johnson; a special friend, Ruthie Wallace, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
