Ida Mae
Hatten
January 28, 1930 – February 21, 2022
Early Monday February 21, 2022, at the age of 92, Ida Mae Barnes Hatten (also known as Ma, Aunt Ida, Mommie, Grandma, Grandma Ida, Bit-O Honey and Grandma Honey) took the hand of an Angel and entered eternal rest. Ida Mae was born in Zuni, North Carolina on January 28, 1930.
Ida married Osborne Wynn Sr. from this union they had three children Darleen, Angela, and Osborne Jr., upon the resolve of that union she met and married Alton Hatten Sr. On one of her many adventures to California she met Lou Rawls in LAX airport.
Ida was employed as a retail worker at Scott Grocery Store, Overton's Market and Red Barn in Portsmouth and later Ida worked at Flowers Bakery.
Ida Mae was a faithful member of St. Joseph A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as the president of the No. 3 usher board for almost 60 years. Ida was the Beginners Sunday school teacher, Life Members Chairperson, founder of the Children's Usher Board and Member of the Missionary Board. She served as a Delegate to the District and Annual Conferences. She was well known, loved, and respected throughout Zion. Ida loved good singing (as she called it) and would frequent Choir Union, any quartet singing and every Usher Anniversary that she could attend. At the tender age of 90, Ida was still standing as a Door Keeper in the House of the Lord. Ida loved her Church and supported every pastor. Ida led many fundraising events for her church including the stage play, "Everyman" rewritten by Alton Hatten Sr.
Ida was predeceased by her parents Rueben Bonds and Annie Sue Barnes, her stepfather Alexander Barnes, Sr., her sisters Clara, Mary Sue and Gladys (Duck)and her brother Alexander Jr.
Ida leaves to cherish her memory her children Darleen Woodard (William Sr.), Angela Cole (Kennith Sr.), and Osborne Jr. Ida also leaves to cherish her memory nine grandchildren; Marcus Sherrill, Andre Sherrill, Thomas Sherrill, William Woodard Sr., Angela Wilkins, Cleavon Sherrill, Jason Woodard, Michael Woodard, and Osborne Beasley, thirty great grandchildren, fifteen great-great grandchildren along with a host of nieces and nephews. She shared a special bond with her Goddaughter Rev. Dr. Joy Carrington, Lt. Col. Joyce Shambley, Stephanie Barnes, Yolanda Edmunds, Tracey Losasso and Vikki Barnes.
The family would like to thank everyone for their condolences, prayers, and acts of kindness during this time.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2022 at St. Joseph AME Zion Church. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Vieiwng will be held from 3pm until 5pm Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
