Obituary

James Durant, Jr., peacefully departed this life on July 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Woodbridge, Virginia. James was the beloved son of the late Demetry T. Durant and James E. Durant, Sr. Born a twin, he shared a special bond with his late sister, Janice Durant.

James was a devoted husband to Celestine (Morris) Durant, and a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Raised in the Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia, he was educated in the Norfolk Public School System and graduated from Lake Taylor High School in 1974.

He worked for 21 dedicated years at the Ford Motor Company. Afterward, he founded Lawngevity Landscaping, a business he built from the ground up with pride and perseverance. Through this company, James not only beautified his community but also provided job opportunities and mentorship to many.

A man of great heart and generosity, James found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He was a true neighbor - always ready to chat, lend a helping hand, or share a laugh. He adored animals and treated each one like family. A gifted bowler and a man of uplifting spirit, James lived by the principle of lifting others whenever he could. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and laughter.

Cherishing his memory are his son Cornelius Halsey Sr. (Victoria), his son Preston Crawford (Naomi), his grandchildren Nyla, Cornelius Jr., Tatianna, Shawntavia, and Preston Jr., and his great-grandson Maxwell Crawford.

He is also survived by his sisters: Barbara T. Woodhouse (Richard) and Barbara Williams, his brother: Derrick Brown, his aunts: Naomi Swint, Dorothy Durant, and Mary Durant. Nieces and nephews: Christopher Woodhouse (Suprina), Rodney Woodhouse (Kimberly), Rodney Smith, Christopher Pollard, Travon Stephenson, Rasheed Evans, Rashad Evans, Richard I. Woodhouse, and Raevyn Woodhouse, and many great-nieces and great-nephews who loved him dearly.

James' warm presence, gentle humor, and giving nature touched everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
