Obituary


Sis. Janet Harmon departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2024.  She was born on May 20, 1961, on the Eastern Shore of VA to Marva Smith Stanley.

Sis. Janet graduated from Central High School on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1979.
She relocated to Chesapeake, VA, and joined the Philippians Church of Christ Holy Disciples under the leadership of the late Elder Dr. Mary L. Woodhouse, Founding Pastor.  She also served faithfully with the Leading Pastor, Elder Thomas Q. Woodhouse, Sr.  She served faithfully until her untimely passing.  Over the last 32 years, she served faithfully in several capacities: Women's Convention (Ready Scribe), Pastoral Assistant, prepared the Holy Communion, Kitchen Committee, Birthday Committee, Church Cleaning Committee, served snacks for Vacation Bible School, and whatever else her hands found to do.

Sis. Janet was a preschool teacher at New Light Baptist School of Excellence, Virginia Beach, VA and an afterschool teacher at Central Christian Academy, Portsmouth, VA.  She operated the J and E (Jada and Emmanuel) Home Daycare.  She was the Home Health Aide for her grandmother.  She provided love and superior care for her grandmother during the last four years of Mother Fannie Smith's life.  Sis. Janet loved her family.  She truly adored her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed daily phone calls with her sister, Karen, and Uncle Vincent. She always made sure we as the family stayed up to date on all birthdays, anniversaries, and important information. She also sent out daily encouraging text messages to family and friends.  She will be greatly missed.

Sis. Janet was preceded in death by her sister, Marsha Reid; stepfather, Deacon Van Stanley; grandmother, Mother Fannie Smith; two uncles, Deacon Delmas Smith and Deacon Malatarf Smith; and two cousins, Ta-Nie Kees and Chosen Smith.

Sis. Janet leaves to cherish her memories three children Sis. Shamekia (Michael) Broady; Randolph Harmon, Jr. and Ryan Harmon of Chesapeake, VA; mother, Deaconess Marva Stanley, Painter, VA; two grandchildren, Jada Mells, Flowood, MS; and Emmanuel Broady, Chesapeake, VA; brother, James Smith, Eastern Shore, VA; sister, Karen (William) Teagle, Seaford, DE; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, March 16, 2024, at First Baptist Church Berkley, 706 Berkley Ave Ext, Norfolk. A wake will be held from 6pm until 7pm Friday, March 15, 2024, at Philippians Church of Christ, 1927 Liberty Street, Chesapeake. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
