Jean Cason Mayes was born September 23, 1930 to Amos and Willie Ann Cason in Norfolk, Virginia. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Tidewater Community College.

As a faithful and devoted lifelong member of Saint John's AME Church, she served as past president of Female Usher Board #2, member of the Lay Organization, and a member of the Nannie C. Phelps Women's Missionary Society where she served as a unit leader for the Juliette Shields unit for many years. She also loved spending time with her family the Silver Strands Senior group.

She was married to the late James Mayes (Ret. USN) and together they raised five children. Carolyn C. Sierra (deceased) Joan Cason of Henderson, NV, Anthony F. Cason (deceased) Daniel Lee Cason of Norfolk and Rev. Jay Mayes (Rev. Toni) of Chesapeake. She is preceded in death by sisters Hattie Cason, Mildred Garner (Wallace deceased) Fred W. Cason (Ann deceased). She leaves to cherish her loving memories two sisters Ruth C. Smith and Norma Hurdle, grandchildren Anthony L. Cason, Troy Cason, Daniel Jones, Danielle Jones, Dominic Arrington, Ashley Calvert, Toni Riddick. She has twenty great grand children and two great great grands along with a host of cousins and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held 11:00 am. Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Zion Community Church-Port Norfolk 300 Broad Street, Portsmouth, VA 23707. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. Viewing will be from 4pm until 5pm Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake.
