Chesapeake - Joe Dancy Nixon, 86, of the 2100 block of Burnside Place departed this life May 22, 2012. Born in North Carolina, he was a longtime member of Garden of Prayer #3, where he served as a Deacon and an usher. He was a longshoreman for over 20 years until his retirement, and a member of Local 1248.
He is predeceased by his wife, Gladys E. Nixon, a son, Joseph D. Nixon, and a daughter, Yvonne Tatem. Survivors include, two daughters, Dana A. Dishman (Howard) of Alexandria, VA; and Deborah D. Hill (Bishop Fred E. Hill) of Chesapeake; three sons, LTC (Ret.) Jerome Q. Nixon (Audrey) and Walter R. Nixon (Carolyn) of Chesapeake, and Dr. Dwight A. Nixon (Brenda) of Suffolk; thirteen grandchildren, a cousin, Olivia Scott of Baltimore, MD, and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Garden of Prayer #3, 200 W. 28th St, Norfolk, with Pastor William D. White presiding. Internment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will from 3-8pm Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, where the family will receive friends from 7-8pm. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.pretlowandsons.com.
