Mrs. Juanita Newsome Whitehurst of Chesapeake, Virginia passed away peacefully in Frederick, Maryland at the Alpha & Omega Home with her family surrounding her on September 28, 2009 after an extended illness. She was the loving wife of Nathan Mckinley Whitehurst, Jr. who passed on November 25, 2006, and the daughter of the late Clifton Bernard Newsome and Margaret Ridley Newsome.
Born on January 28, 1930 in New York City, she attended New York Public Schools through 4 th grade. After moving to Norfolk Virginia, she attended school there, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. Her BS Degree in Elementary Education was obtained from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia and she taught in the Norfolk Public School System for 35 years before retiring.
A life member of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk, Virginia "Nita" as friends called her, served on several church committees and sang with the GW Jones Memorial Choir at the church. She was a founding member of the Delicados, Inc. a charitable. civic and social club, which now has chapters in several cities. Juanita enjoyed bowling, dancing, traveling and mall-walking with her beloved husband "Nate".
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sister, Margaret Newsome Turner (Cornelius) of Frederick, Maryland; five nieces - Valerie Jean, Denise White (Robert), Eileen King, Sharon Russell and Daphney Creecy; four nephews - Kenneth Turner(Nicole); Eric Turner , Randolph Whitehurst, Jr., Marc Whitehurst, three brothers-in-law Randolph Whitehurst, Sr.(Jamie). James Whitehurst(Elizabeth), Elvin Whitehurst(Paula), one sister-in law Ethel Whitehurst Alexander (Enoch) and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
