Leland Elbert Hines transitioned from his earthly dwelling to his heavenly home on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Beth Shalom Assisted Living Facility, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Leland was born on May 25, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Isaiah and Lottie Hines. He was preceded in death by siblings Isaiah N. Hines; Ferebee Boyd; Paul Hines, (Jackie); and nephew, Walter Boyd.
Leland graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1955, where he was acting secretary. He was a life long member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, until his health failed. He served as an usher and trustee, and was a member of male choir. He worked for the city of Norfolk for over thirty years, and he rose through the ranks from a helper to supervisor. He was a member of Masonic Temple Joshua 66, and he was a veteran of the US Army 82nd Airbourne.
Leland leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife of over 50 years, Pearline H. Hines; daughter Vernice Smith (Ronald) of Midland, Ontario; two granddaughters Terri Manley and Ternisha Manley-Young; two great grandchildren, Joshua Young and Takya Manley. His also lis survived by nieces and nephews, Maxine Datillo, David Boyd, Don Boyd, Larry Boyd, Paula Longergan, and Michael Hines, and host of others family and friends.
A service will be held at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, located 2201 Wingfield Avenue, Chesapeake, VA 23324, on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 1100 a.m. The viewing will be Friday, June 2, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Pretlow and Sons, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, VA
