Born in Sussex County , he served in the United States Navy as a Command Master Chief, retiring after 28 years of loyal and dedicated service. He was a member of Mt. Moriah UCC in Waverly, Virginia .

He was married to the late Lillie F. Jackson for 34 years and to this union 3 children were born, Leon Jackson Jr. (Dawn), Alicia Warren (Howard), and Karen Weaver (John). He also leaves four grandchildren, two sisters, Nola Mae of Richmond and Jessie of Culpepper, Virginia, and a host of family and friends.
