Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law, Lillie Elois Sloan departed this life on August 25, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Lillie M. Sloan of Norfolk, Virginia. She was predeceased by her son, Terry Wayne Linyear, sister Josephine and brother Thomas.

She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and the Norfolk Division of Virginia State then; "Little State." Many remembered her by the nickname Ball Hawk as a former basketball player of Booker T. Washington High School. She was a noted designer and seamstress of the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, and she substituted as a tailoring instructor at Norfolk State College.

In later years she was owner and proprietor of her own business, Tichell Custom Design-Tailoring, specializing in weddings, graduations, and outfits for both men and women. Many young people remembered her from designing gowns and tuxedos for them even when they couldn't afford one. She furnished the material and labor to make sure they would always remember their graduation and weddings. She made men suits and dresses for the ladies' church choirs, and usher boards. She became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Walter L. Hamilton Sr., and remained a very active member until her health began to fail.

She leaves to cherish her beloved sons, Edwin L. Sloan (Annette) Virginia Beach, VA, Wendell Linyear (Christine) Havertown, PA, LaRoi D. Sloan (Michelle) Chesapeake, VA, and Darryl R. Sloan(Avis) Norfolk, VA; daughters, Karen B. Mackey, Newport News, VA and Sabrita D.
