IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lula Mae
Irby
April 24, 1945 – April 1, 2023
Lula, affectionally known as "Temp" by her family, was born in Chatham County, North Carolina on April 24, 1945. Her parents were the late Ernest Dorsett and Ruth Degraffenreidt. Lula was raised by her aunt and uncle Bernice and James Newby which she was grateful for.
As a child, Lula was a member of the family church Mitchell AME Zion Church in Pittsboro, North Carolina. After moving to Norfolk, Virginia with her father Lula joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.
As a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School Lula attended Russell's Beauty College where she became a Cosmetologist. Working alongside Ms. Jessie Brehon for about 3 years until Ms. Brehon retired. Lula purchased Ms. Brehon's salon which became Euphoria Hair Styling. Lula loved attending hair shows as well as learning new techniques to come back to share with Janice (her co-worker). Also, she enjoyed shopping, reading novels and spending time with the neighborhood children. She and her partner in crime Janice Richardson worked together for 50 years. They became more like sisters than co-workers. After 53 years as a stylist Lula retired in 2020.
Lula was married to the love of her life Luther Irby for more than 44 years. They were a wonderful couple and those who knew them enjoyed spending time in their home. During their union one child was born, Bryant Irby. Lula loved her only son and he was the apple of her eye.
"Temp" was from a blended family that included her mom, dad, auntie and uncle. She was preceded in death by her husband Luther Irby, Ruth Degraffenreidt (mother), Ernest Dorsett (father). Bernice Newby (auntie), James Newby (uncle) and brothers Kenneth Foster and Freward Dorsett.
Lula is survived by her son Bryant and his 2 daughters Tiara Johnson (Dan) and Camron Hollie. Also, she is survived by sisters Barbara Alston. Linda Patin (Edward), Carolyn Evans (Nevador), Ernestine Dorsett, Annette Benton and brothers William Foster, James Newby, Johnnie Benton and Reynold Cruthfield. Lula has 4 great grandchildren with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and 1 aunt, Christian Degraffenreidt.
Lula will be remembered as a mother, mentor and friend to many that came to visit their home. Special thanks to the Sample and Madison families for their love and friendship throughout the years. Let us not forget her faithful dog Teddy which she loved so much.
The Irby family will receive family and friends on Sunday, April 9th at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake from 3 to 5 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday at the funeral home, where a viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until service time.
