Mother Mary Bunnell Allbritton

Reflections of Her Life

Mother Mary Bunnell Allbritton was daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Bunnell. She was born on December 10, 1918, in Norfolk County, Virginia. She departed this life on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at Autumn Care Nursing Home of Chesapeake, Chesapeake, Virginia.

Mother Allbritton was educated in Norfolk County, Virginia. She was married to the late Deacon Samuel Allbritton, Sr. for over 68 years. She was a school bus driver with Chesapeake Public Schools and retired after 29 years of service. She attended New Willow Grove Baptist Church for over 79 years, until her health declined. She was the Mother of the Church, participated in the Senior Choir, Deaconess Ministry, Ushers Ministry, and the Missionary Ministry.

Mother Allbritton was a member of the Golden Age Club and the United Order of Tents, Norfolk, Virginia. She was in the Autumn Care Nursing Home and enjoyed church fellowship, making jewelry, and playing Bingo and Board games. She faithfully attended the many worship services at Autumn Care Nursing Home leading songs, prayer, and the scripture.

Those who knew Mother Allbritton were no stranger to her glowing smile, comforting hugs, and the love she shared always. She was a very affectionate person who touched the lives of many with her kindness and beautiful smile.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph, and Sarah Hinton Bunnell; two brothers, Walter and Joseph Bunnell; two sisters, Beulah Grandy and Bessie Brown; one brother-in-law, John Roscoe Wilson, Sr.; her husband, Samuel L. Allbritton, Sr.; two daughters, Ella Allbritton Sykes, and Delores Allbritton Moyler; and a son; Milton Allbritton.

Mother Allbritton leaves to cherish her loving memories: three sons, Samuel Allbritton, Jr. (Mae) of Chesapeake, VA, Marvin Allbritton (Anne) of Norfolk, VA, and Robert Allbritton (Beverly) of Chesapeake, VA. and one daughter in law, Christine Allbritton of Chesapeake, VA; one sister in law, Mrs. Mary Anne Wilson; nine grandchildren, Samuel III (Sheila), Stanley (April), Terry (Robin), Marva (Andrew), Michael (Valerie), Robby,Jr., Marcus, Alton (Heather) and Lamont (Leslie); 16 great-grandchildren; Desarae, Nicholas (Sharmaine), Elana, Ramon, Rason, Avlyn, Porchia, Starr, Jada, Romel, David, Monai', Eliyah, Laylah, Logan, Langston; three great great-grandchildren; Brayden, Amaray, and Layla;, and a very special host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at New Willow Grove Baptist Church, 845 St. Brides Road, West, Chesapeake. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held from 5pm until 7pm Friday, March 4 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
