Virginia Beach - Mary Sue Haynes of the 3000 block of Honey Tree Lane was called home to be with the Lord February 24, 2008. Born September 11, 1916 in Prince George County, Virginia, she was the first child of the late Vassie and John Thomas Johns. At an early age, she confessed faith in God and attended Smith Corner Baptist (now Union Baptist). Mary Sue later moved to New York where she began a career as a beautician, and united with the Canaan Baptist Church in New York. She was a faithful member until her retirement. After retirement, she moved to Virginia Beach and rejoined Union Baptist Church and was a faithful member until her health declined.
Auntie as she was called had a beautiful spirit, a sweet soul, and was a loving sister, aunt, and friend. Auntie will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. She enjoyed going to church, to movies, shopping, going out to eat with friends and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vassie and John Thomas Johns, her husband, James Russell Haynes, Sr., and her son, James Russell Haynes, Jr. Those remaining to cherish her memory are her sister, Rosie Daughtry of the home, her brother, Wendell Thomas (Annette) of San Diego, California, a special friend, Virginia Mason, one godchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends in New York and Virginia.
A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at Union Baptist Church, 4608 South Blvd, Virginia Beach, with Rev. W. Samuel Walton officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
