Mayrose Evangeline Goodman Murray-Moon peacefully and faithfully entered into eternal rest. Out of the union of the marriage between Walter and Hattie were eight energetic children. She was married to the late James E. Murray, Sr. of Atlantic City, New Jersey the father to her four children. In 1979, she married Alfred C. Moon of Chesapeake, Virginia.
She attended Tidewater Community College, trained in Interior Decorating at Old Dominion University, and subsequently graduated in May 1979 from Norfolk State College along with her two children Michael and Vernell. She was a clothing designer with her own label, as well as, a gifted wedding and event planner. Mayrose served as a Steward under five Pastors at New Mount Olive AME Church. She was a member of the Number 2 Choir, and was pinned as a member of the Women's Missionary Society of New Mount Olive, AME Church during at Virginia Annual Conference session. She also served as a Stewardess, Class leader and a member of the Educational Club at the AME Church. Her passion was for ministry and in 1981; she started working for the Christian Broadcasting Network, 700 Club, becoming the first African American full time counselor hired as a training coach. She retired from the ministry in 1997 after a serious car accident that led to a stroke. She was a member of the Chesapeake Democratic Women, NAACP, the Providence Square Civic League, the Boy scouts of America Dean Mother, and volunteered her services whenever needed until her health failed.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, the Rev. James E. Murray, Jr., (Yolanda), of Cleveland, OH, Michael Murray, (Kathy) of Upper Marlboro, MD, and one daughter the Rev. Glenda P. Murray-Kelly, of Chesapeake, VA, and the Late Peter J. Kelly, (former son in law); three sisters, and their husbands Arlonia Johnson and (the late Ward Johnson), Marchetta Smith (Carnell Sr.) and Veora Harding (Hiawatha); two brothers, COL (R) Thaddious Goodman (Diainn) of Ijamsville, MD, and Walter L. Goodman, Boston, MA; grandchildren: Gershom, Ishmael, Christopher, their mother (Christine D. Murray), Michael, Jr., Glenda, Shantea, Charles, Laverne, Demita and Kyle; ten great grandchildren; three spirituals daughters Teri, Yolanda, and LeKeshia; three spiritual sons, Michael, Ty, and Michael Williamson; twenty spiritual grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nephews, great nieces, cousins, and a dear friend Evangelist Virginia Williams.
The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 12:00 pm by the Rev. Christian J. Savage, Pastor, New Mount Olive AME Church, 1953 Campostella Road, Chesapeake. Viewing will be held from 5-7pm Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
