IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred Sykes
Banks
October 13, 1930 – May 19, 2025
Mildred Sykes Banks peacefully joined the angels on May 19, 2025. She was born on October 13, 1930, in Boston, Massachusetts. The daughter of the late Ralph A. Sykes, Sr. and Gladys Colbert, she spent her childhood years and early education there before relocating with her family to Southeastern Virginia. Mildred worked as a maid for many years in Norfolk and last worked for the Keys family who provided financial assistance during her retirement years.
She was a dedicated and active member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception for many years. Her love of music contributed to her becoming a loyal member of the Gospel Choir and Mass Choir as well as singing with the Chesapeake Civic Chorus for many years serving as hospitality chairperson. She was also a loyal member of the Barrett-Newell Court #279 of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, serving as Mistress of Arms for many years; Children's Liturgy of the Word; the Pastoral Care Ministry and the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of the Holy Spirit #2145. She loved animals and raised several pets over her adult years while contributing regularly to the SPCA.
Mildred was an independent individual, especially in her later years. She could often be seen walking or catching public transportation to go places until knee problems slowed her down. She spent her last years in a nursing facility and very much enjoyed her new, worry-free life there. She was loved by the other patients and the workers alike and participated in most planned activities.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was predeceased by her husband Clarence Banks, Sr., a son-Michael Sheriff; three sisters-Barbara Easter, Frances Holloman and Juanita Sykes; and two brothers-Ralph A. Sykes, Jr. and Vincent Sykes. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter-Laverne Banks; her son-Clarence Banks, Jr.; her sister-Carolyn Lewis; a granddaughter-Kimberly Gilbert and a host of other grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
