Naomi Smith
October 10, 1933 – February 11, 2024
Mother Fannie Naomi Smith affectionately known as "Mame" departed this life on Sunday, February 11, 2024. She was born on October 10, 1933, to the late Esley and Maggie Sue Rogers Smith.
Mother Smith was reared on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and was educated in the New Boston Public School System. She was a loving mother and grandmother, not only did she raise her own children, but she also raised and babysat many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her home was a place of love where you were sure to eat homemade yeast rolls and watch wrestling and westerns.
Mother Smith relocated to Chesapeake, Va., and joined the Philippians Church of Christ Holy Disciples under the leadership of the late Elder Dr. Mary L. Woodhouse. She loved her Pastor and grieved the loss of God's faithful servant. Until her health failed in 2020, Mother Smith served faithfully on the Mother's Board, Missionary Board, and Women's Convention. She was a devoted attendee of Sunday School and Bible Study. She encouraged and loved the youth.
Mother Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Esley and Maggie Sue Smith; one son, Deacon Delmas Smith; one granddaughter, Marsha Reid; one great-grandson, Ta-Nie Kees; and one great-great grandson, Chosen Smith; one son-in-law, Deacon Van Stanley; and three sisters Lois Rogers, Louise Rogers, and Gustavia Smith.
Mother Smith leaves to cherish her memories five children, Deaconess Marva Stanley, Painter, Va.; Bro. Vincent (Lillie) Smith, Cape Charles, Va.; Sis. Runtha (Sylvester) Giddens, Augusta, Ga.; First Lady Sheila (Rev. Dr. Reginald) Woodhouse, Hampton, Va.; Evangelist Dr. Kim S. Downing, Chesapeake, Va; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 24 great great-grandchildren; a special sister, Deaconess Maggie Helen Smith; daughter-in-law, Deaconess Elizabeth Smith; nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, Febraury 17, 2024 at First Baptist Church Berkley, 706 Berkley Ave Ext, Norfolk. A wake will be held from 6pm until 7pm Friday, Febraury 16, 2024 at Philippians Church of Christ, 1927 Liberty Street, Chesapeake. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrandgements.
