Obituary

Mother Corrine Holloway Sanders Pettus, (Known to her family as Peewee) was born on May 31, 1926, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Bessie) Holloway, who migrated from Greenwood, South Carolina. She was the youngest of four children, three of whom preceded her in death; Eula Holloway Davis, John Holloway and Lilly Mae Holloway Ferguson Kearney.

At the age of two Corrine's mother Elizabeth died and she was raise by her mother's sister, Roberta (Nannie) and James Walker.

Corrine was nurtured in a Christian home and at the age of 12 she accept the Lord and was baptized at Christian Hope Baptist Church. As a member she served as President of BYPU; sang on Chorus and was a member of the Ushers' board.

Corrine was educated in the Philadelphia Public School until she left in the 11th grade due to Nannie's illness, but finished with an GED while working at Kent Rest.

On a visit to New York with her father, she met her future husband Elliott Sanders and after a yearlong courtship they were united in holy matrimony in December 1944. After her marriage she moved to New York. From this union was born one son Elliott (Butch) Sanders, who preceded her in dead.

After the death of Elliott Sanders Sr., through a co-worker she met William Edward Pettus in 1968. After an extensive friendship they were married (1979) until his dead in August 1998.

Corrine was employed in various jobs: Babysitter, she loved children, Factory worker, Clever Idea Party Favor (14yrs), House Manager for Paul Stookey of "Peter, Paul & Mary," (13yrs) and a clerk in the New York Human Resources & Social Security Office until retirement (19yrs). After retirement she moved from New York to Chesapeake, VA.

When Corrine retired to Chesapeake, Va., she joined in fellowship with New Light Full Gospel Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Bishop Rudolph B. Lewis Sr... She loved being the Treasure of the Addie B. Hammond Senior Group.

Corrine loved to travel, not just back and forward from New York to Philly, but Germany, Spain, Paris France, Calica Mexico, Washington State. El Paso & Dallas TX, Key West, but her favorite place to visit was the Bahamas

Corrine was known for her hobbies of sewing, knitting, crocheting and of which any of you have one of her creation with the label "Sewn Especially for you."

Corrine leaves to cherish her memories: one grandson Elliott Sanders 3rd & one great-grandson Elliott Sanders 4th, of Miami FL; one granddaughter Sandra Wright, of Chesapeake VA; one nephew Robert Charles Ferguson of Pinetta, FL; Cousin Deloris Holloway-James & Great-niece Celestine Murphy of Philadelphia, Pa; one of many great nieces and nephews, plus too numerous to count great-great nieces & nephews; and great-great-great nieces & nephews. Also her adopted children the "Mong Family;" Michael; Malin, Nadja, Stephine, Jonathan and their spouses and children; Rev. Ronald and Deborah Smith; Leroy and Gina Wallace. Also her beloved New Light Full Gospel Baptist Church Family.

The viewing will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at New Light Full Gospel Baptist Church, 5549 Indian Road, Virginia Beach, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 pm.
