Obituary



Chesapeake - On Saturday, November 25, 2006, Nathan McKinley Whitehurst, Jr. died peacefully at Chesapeake Health Care after an extended illness. Born, November 3, 1924 in Chesapeake, Virginia, he was the son of Nathan Whitehurst, Sr., and Sarah Whitehurst. Nathan was educated in Norfolk public schools.



He was employed for 35 years by the United States Postal Service and retired in1987. Nathan joined the Army and served as a Sergeant during World War II. He served in the Army Reserves, and was awarded the rank of Captain by the United States Reserve Commission prior to his retirement.



A member of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Nathan served many years ushering and singing in the GW Jones Memorial Choir. He loved playing billiards and earned many bowling awards. Card games, dancing, and traveling with Juanita was his specialty for fun. ?Nate?, as friends called him, was an avid gardener. He earned his degree in Industrial Arts at A & T University, North Carolina. Nate enjoyed his ?mall-walking in later years. He was indeed a Christian example to mankind. Among many social activities, Nathan was a member of the Deli-Gent Chapter (Norfolk), Delicados Inc.



He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved and devoted wife, Juanita Newsome Whitehurst; three brothers, Elvin Whitehurst (Paula), James Whitehurst (Elizabeth), and Randolph Whitehurst (Jamie); a sister, Ethel Whitehurst Alexander (Enoch); a sister-in-law, Margaret Newsome Turner (Cornelius), and a host of other relatives and friends.



A funeral service will be held Thursday at noon at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. A wake service will be held Wednesday from 6pm until 7 pm. at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
