Ophelia Sanders Berry, the only child of Luella and Frank Sanders was born on March 8, 1915 in Apopka, Florida.
She attended grade school in Apopka, Florida and high school in Atlanta, George. Ophelia was a graduate of Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia which enabled her to obtain her first job-preparing food that was to be used to demonstrate new appliances.
She met her husband Carl Brandon Berry while living in Atlanta, Georgia. Her three children were born there. Due to her father's illness, she returned with her family to Apopka to help care for her father. Upon her return, she taught grade school in several districts in Orange County.
Ophelia was a strong advocate of education and supported each of her children at their chosen universities. Over the course her life she also supported others in their pursuit of higher education.
She was a lifetime member of Saint Paul A.M.E. Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, treasurer of the Missionary Board and member of the food bank auxiliary. She enjoyed spending her time reading and studying the Bible and was considered a Bible scholar. Since relocating to Virginia Beach, she joined Saint Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church.
Ophelia leaves to cherish her memory her children, Barbara B. Winder, Eugene M. Berry, and Luvenia B. Goolsby; grandchildren Gina Berry, Melvyn Berry, Selden Winder, Patrice Winder and Bettina Goolsby; first cousins Iana Sanders Mott and Charles Sanders and other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 11th at Saint Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church with Dr. Joseph Lamb, Sr., officiating. interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be held from 3-7pm Monday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
