Robert Lee Barnes Sr. was the third child born to George Thomas and Mary Ronnie on January 24, 1934. His elementary education was at Waterford school in Chesapeake and then he went to Norfolk County schools. He worked in Norfolk and later was employed by Cox Cable.
Robert was affectionately known as "Pudin," because as he told it, he was sweet as pudding. He had a sweet tooth that wouldn't quit and a pan of gravy didn't have a chance around him.
Robert was a kind gentle man, always willing to give a helping hand when ever needed. He loved children and they loved him, And let's not forget, no one could out dress him.
He was a longtime member of St. Joseph AMEZ Church., where he served on the usher board for many years. He wore many hats in his service to St. Joseph and God Almighty.
He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Barnes, his parents, George Thomas and Mary Ronnie, two daughters, Shelia and Sabrina, two sons, Claude and Thaddeus, siblings, Lillie Mae, Harry, James, Bruce, Fred and Elizabeth.
He leaves to cherish his memory, four sons, Robert Jr. (Gloria) of Suffolk, Earnest (Pam) of Norfolk; Antonia (Teresa) of Chesapeake, and Dwight (Rita) of Suffolk; a beloved sister, Lola of Chesapeake; and a brother, George (Gladys) of Del City. He had a special bond with his step daughter, Debra DeMills-Smith (James) of Chesapeake. Also cherishing his memory are the children of Dorothy Mae Slater and the children of Lilly Dillard. Robert loved a host of grandchildren, great grand's, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph A.M.E. Zion Church, 1540 Atlantic Avenue, Chesapeake. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be held from 3-7pm Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
