Robert James Peterson went home to be with his heavenly Father on July 11, 2022, with his wife by his side, after a long battle with Parkinson. He was born in Elizabethtown, North Carolina on May 25, 1943, to the late Elva McCoy and Vander McDowell. He was united in marriage to Yolanda Peterson for 31 years.

Robert was employed at Metro Machine Corporation from April 23, 1980, until his retirement June 30, 2011. He was a strong man that kept fighting during his illness, when everyone else thought it was over. He was a stylish dresser and a quiet man.

Robert is predeceased by his parents, a brother Albert Peterson, Jr., sisters Catherine Peterson and Louise Pearson, and nephews Thomas Pearson, and Otis Pearson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife Yolanda Peterson of Chesapeake, VA; sister Betty McLaughlin of Elizabethtown, NC; two nephews, Kenny Pearson (Anita), and Ronnie Pearson (Faye) of Elizabethtown, NC; one niece Collen Pearson of Elizabethtown, NC; mother-in-law Mary Mitchell (Henry) of Jacksonville, Fla; sister-in-law Valerie Dozier (Carlton) of Killen, TX; brothers-in-law Herbert Bernard (Charon), and Alonzo Bernard of Chesapeake, VA, and Enoch Bernard (Shelly) of Suffolk, VA; aunt-in-law Edith Drake (Fredrick) of Chesapeake, VA; uncle-in-law Fulton Liston of Chesapeake, VA; nephew-in-law, Raymond Williams (Wanda) of Portsmouth, VA; and a host of great nephews, great nieces, relatives, and friends.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Frist Baptist Church Crestwood, 4701 Bainbridge Blvd, Chesapeake. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be Friday, July 22, 2022 from 5pm until 7pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
