Rosa Lee Joyner, born September 1, 1928, departed this earthly life to enter into eternal rest on Sunday morning, January 12, 2020.
She was the second of five children born to Colonel Johnson and Ozella Hicks Ross of Henderson, North Carolina. She attended Henderson Public Schools before migrating to Norfolk, Virginia.
Rosa met Charles "Dobie" Joyner and they were married. They had 10 children, Barbara Ann, Justine, Charles Jr., Anthony, Calvin, Carolyn, Kathy (Kenneth), Regina (Bryan), Virgil and Robin (Jerry). Rosa inherited 6 children from her husband, Charlene, Viola, Lillie, Ethel (Brian), Yvonne and Charles. Rosa had a total of 48 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Rosa enjoyed cooking yok, hosting family and friends, dancing and the occasional stroll through her local Farm Fresh. She was a member of St. Joseph A.M.E. Zion Church where she often volunteered and was an active member of the ushers board.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Charles Joyner Sr., her father Cernal Johnson, her mother Ozella Hicks Ross, her sisters Bernice Gordon and Ruth Fleming, her niece Patricia Smith, her son's-in law Joseph Brewer and Oscar Sessoms, her grandson Russell Moyler, her step daughter Yvonne Summerville, and her daughter Kathy Harris.
Rosa is survived by her 9 children Barbara Ann, Justine, Charles Jr., Anthony, Calvin, Carolyn, Regina, Virgil and Robin. Her 5 step children Charlene, Viola, Lillie, Ethel and Charles. Her 2 sisters Beatrice Boone and Betty Louise Wesley (Jesse).
A home going celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2020 at St. Joseph AME Zion Church, 1540 Atlantic Avenue, Chesapeake. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
