Obituary





Chesapeake - Rosa Dinah Spellman Askew went to her heavenly home on Friday, July 6, 2007 in the early morning hours. Mother Askew, also known as the "Candy Lady of Tidewater Park," was born October 3, 1907 to the late Alice and Denson Spellman. She was a native of Princess Anne County, now Virginia Beach, VA. Mother Askew was a member of Freedom Church of God in Christ in Norfolk, where she served faithfully until she became homebound. She was always a faithful servant as an Usher and a member of the Mother's Board.



Mother Askew is predeceased by her son, Elwood Askew. She leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter, District Missionary Verna L. McNair (Elder Toney L. McNair, Sr.), sons, Elder Francis U. Askew (Barbara), and Gary L. Askew; 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, one surviving sister, Ethel Hayes, as well as a host of other family members and friends.



The worship service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Church of God in Christ, Elder Calvin Durham, host Pastor. Rev. Dr. Toney L. McNair, Jr. will preside. Elder Francis U. Askew and Elder Duane S. McNair, Sr. will give the eulogy. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held Wednesday from 2pm - 7 pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake
