Obituary




Shirley B. Hopkins of the 500 block of Longdale Crescent , Chesapeake, VA departed this earth on March 17, 2010, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Shirley, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the daughter of the late Charles Barnes and Ruth C. Bellamy and the step-daughter of John H. Bellamy. She received her early education in Norfolk and Philadelphia, PA Public School Systems. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Norfolk State University. Her employment included the Internal Revenue Service-Tax Agent, Tidewater Community College-taught Accounting, and she taught math in middle and high schools in Norfolk and Chesapeake Public School Systems. Shirley was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church for 62 years. During her years of service she was involved in several ministries: young people's choir and usher board, food service, senior missionaries, chaired various programs and chaired the budget ministry from 1991-2004. Her other affiliations included the United Order of Tents Elmira Elizabeth Tent #364, Junior Elks, Arabia Court #23 Daughter of Isis, John Bond Assembly #8 Order of Golden Circle, Past Matron Past Patron Circle, and Past Worthy Matron Excelsior Chapter #82 Order of Eastern Star and head youth advisor for Excelsior Youth Department.


Shirley was predeceased by two brother-in-laws: Leon and Howard Hopkins and one sister-in-law: Cynthia Parker.



Shirley is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lawrence L. Hopkins, Sr.; three children: Deborah R., Lawrence L. Jr., and Angela Y. Hopkins of Chesapeake, VA; one sister Sara E. Curry of Virginia Beach, VA.; three brother -in -laws: Gene Hopkins (Elizabeth); Raymond Hopkins (Jacqueline) of Chesapeake, VA; James Hopkins of Virginia Beach, VA; three sister -in -laws: Marquerite Jones (Fred) of Hampden, CT; Betty Darden (Maurice) of Durham, NC; Carolyn Harris (Cordell) of Norfolk, VA; one uncle James A. Pharr of Norfolk, VA; special friend Helen M. Carr of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.



Viewing will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 3 pm - 5 pm at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. A wake Service will be held at New Calvary Baptist Church, 800 East Virginia Beach Boulevard from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
